Helping our veterans....one pup at a time!
In loving memory of Debra S. Miller - Past Auxiliary President
Debra Sue Garstka-Miller was a very intelligent, beautiful, creative, caring, loving person whom if you got to know her – you would have loved her.
Growing up my older brother, Alan and sister, Debra and I were military brats - our father served 23 years in the U.S. Air Force Secret Service and mother served 19 years collectively U.S. Air Force, and Federal Civil Service. In 1983, our older brother Alan joined the U.S. Navy where we lost him two years later September 1985 while serving on the U.S.S. Deyo Destroyer. As for Debra - she had a dream to join the U.S. Air Force Academy once she graduated from High School. As we all know – life likes to throw us curve balls and Debra’s Air Force Academy dream faded.
During the late 1980’s, Debra’s love for dogs had grown immensely – you could see the training and love in her rottweilers – Sheba and Ian. Then came along her favorite – Logan. Logan was a one of a kind Australian Shepherd mix (pictured). Logan carried her in the great times and low times.
Debra and I would always look for opportunities to help our veterans. About seven years ago, Debra mentioned joining the VFW Post in Frisco with her U.S. Army Veteran Captain John Miller. She was excited to be part of the Post 8273 Auxiliary and asked me to join as well. Over the next year or two – Debra was elected as the Auxiliary President. Her creativity and passion help executing the Duck Run with the RoughRiders.
In 2021, following a State Convention - Debra brought forth a goal to the Auxiliary. She wanted to sponsor a dog for a veteran – two of her passions. Debra was unable to meet that goal due to her unexpected passing in October 2021. However – in honor of my older sister and VFW Post 8273 Auxiliary President – we are on a mission to fulfill her dream of connecting dogs with veterans.
